Workplace Noise Dangers for Hearing Loss

With on-the-job, noise-induced hearing loss a widespread occupational issue, it’s easy to see it’s a problem that needs attention. Safety managers have long struggled with having to include recordable cases in the OSHA 300 log. It’s obvious no one wants to see their employees get hurt, or find that by the time noise-induced hearing loss is recognized, the damage has already been done.

Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick Signs House Bill 52 Into Law!

Massachusetts advocates were thrilled to learn that Governor Deval signed HB 52 into law August 7, 2012.

House Bill 52, “An Act to Provide Access to Hearing Aids for Children” would mandate insurance coverage for hearing aids for children 21 years old and younger, up to $2,000 per hearing aid every 36 months. On August 2, 2012 the Massachusetts State Legislature passed HB 52, a moment eight long years in the making.

Massachusetts Hearing Aids for Children Coalition (MassHACC) was thrilled. “It was a truly exciting day at the State House!" Rep. Garballey (Arlington) and Rep. Scibeck (South Hadley), Dave Koffman of Rep. Garballey's office and Michele Lisio of Rep. Haddad's office were present. Both the House and the Senate voted unanimously. Teenagers Experienced Reduced Hearing Ability after Attending Concert

Seventy-two percent of teenagers participating in a study experienced reduced hearing ability following exposure to a pop rock performance by a popular female singer.

M. Jennifer Derebery, M.D., House Clinic physician, along with the House Research Institute tested teens’ hearing before and after a concert and presented the study findings at the American Otologic Society meeting on April 21, 2012.
