Ida Institute Announces Four New Members of Judging Panel for Global Ideas Competition

NAERUM, DK  July 10, 2012 – The Ida Institute today announced the newest members of the judging panel for the Institute’s Ideas, Speak up - Action and Awareness for Hearing Loss competition. The global online competition is an open call for ideas that have the potential to generate better understanding of hearing loss, change public perception and encourage people to take action. The judging panel will help to select the three winning ideas that will be announced at the 2013 AudiologyNOW! conference.

US Senate Holds Hearing on Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities July 12, 2012

HLAA supports ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Part of Marcia Dugan’s legacy as past president of Hearing Loss Association of America (then SHHH) and the International Federation of Hard of Hearing People was her involvement in the ad hoc sessions of the CRPD. She worked with others to ensure that issues related to hearing loss were included in the Convention, particularly in the articles on access, access to communication, education, and health care.

HLAA Supports Ratification of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities

June 18, 2012, Hearing Loss Association of America sent letters to the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator John Kerry, and the Ranking Member of that committee, Senator Richard Lugar, urging the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the entire U.S. Senate to act quickly to ratify the U. N. Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities. HLAA was honored to be present at the ceremony when US at the UN in July, 2009 when the US signed onto CRPD. We were thrilled to learn of the submission of CRPD by the Obama Administration to the U.S. Senate for ratification. Moreover we applaud the unified statement of bipartisan support for United States ratification of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities that has been issued by seven senators. In their statement, Senators McCain (R-AZ), Durbin (D-IL), Moran (R-KS), Harkin (D-IA), Barrasso (R-WY), Coons (D-DE), and Udall (D-NM) affirm that the treaty upholds the American values of non-discrimination and equal access for persons with disabilities in all areas of life.

HLAA and Other Advocates Host Congressional Hearing Forum & Reception

WASHINGTON, DC, May 24, 2012 — On May 16, the Friends of the Congressional Hearing Health Caucus (FCHHC) hosted a Hearing Forum and Reception for Representatives, Congressional staff and others interested in hearing health.  At the event which was organized by Hearing Industries Assn (HIA), visitors could have their hearing screened by hearing professionals, test the volume of their Music Player ear buds using a testing dummy provided by the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Assn (ASHA), and participate in a video otoscope demonstration using equipment provided by MedRX, Largo, FL.

Verizon to Offer Text to 911 Services

HLAA learned at an accessibility issues conference call hosted by Verizon that they will soon be offering Verizon customers access to 911 via text messaging. For people with significant hearing loss, gaining access to 911 via text messaging is a huge leap forward. To date, people with hearing loss were relegated to using TTYs or using a voice call to 911 without knowing whether they would be able to hear what the dispatcher said.

Consumer Groups File Petition for Reconsideration

On April 27, 2012, Hearing Loss Association of America, Telecommunications for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Inc. (TDI) and four other consumer organizations and the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet University (TAP) filed a petition with the Federal Communications Commission (Commission) requesting reconsideration of the Commission’s Report and Order on Captioning of Video Programming delivered over the Internet under the 21st Century Video and Communication Act of 2010 (CVAA).

HLAA Applauds Illinois Attorney General’s Settlement with AMC on Movie Captioning

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan announced in Chicago on April 4, 2012 a “landmark settlement with Illinois’ largest movie theater operator that will provide unprecedented access for people with hearing and vision disabilities.”

Madigan said the settlement with AMC Theaters will provide personal captioning services and audio-description technology in all of its theaters and its 460 movie screens in Illinois.

Madigan was joined by AMC representatives and disability rights supporters, including HLAA, to announce the settlement. HLAA members filed a complaint several years ago with the AG’s office and were instrumental the pursuit of this settlement.

The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) has not joined audiologists, hearing aid specialists, and hearing aid manufacturers in their opposition to the new United HealthCare direct service to consumers. Our stance is to give innovative programs such as this one a chance. Why are we saying this?
